Alert: Aquarium Filter Recall

Central Veterinary Associates alerts marine life pet owners of a recent recall from the United Pet Group, headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia. The company is recalling its Top Fin™ Power Filters for Aquariums due to shock hazard to fish and their owners.

The recall was initiated after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found Top Fin Power Filters to be unsafe due to a conductor on their pump motors which, when exposed, could potentially electrify the aquarium water. No injuries or incidents have been reported.

Five models of the filters are included in this recall: Top Fin Power Filters 10, 20, 30, 40 and 75. The filters are black with a trapezoid-shaped top. The words “TOP FIN” are molded into the top of the filter. The filters were also sold as part of Top Fin 5.5 and 10 gallon LED aquarium kits. The product was distributed in PetSmart stores nationwide and online. No other product manufactured by United Pet Group is involved in this recall.

“Marine life owners should immediately stop using the recalled filters, unplug them from the power supply and remove them from the aquarium,” says Dr. John Charos, DVM, President/CEO, Central Veterinary Associates. “You should also contact United Pet Group for a free replacement power filter.”
