Central Veterinary Associates Named Corporate Citizen of the Year by Long Island Business News

Long Island Business News (LIBN) honored Central Veterinary Associates (CVA) as the Corporate Citizen of the Year at the publication’s second annual Corporate Citizenship — The Business of Giving awards ceremony.

This award applauds businesses and leaders for above-and-beyond corporate social responsibility. The award breakfast and ceremony was held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New Yorkon Thursday, September 10.

One of the oldest continuous veterinary practices in the region, CVA prides itself on providing outstanding veterinary medicine and serving as a philanthropic and educational leader throughout local and international communities.

Last fall, the animal practice donated pet medications and supplies to the Los Cabos Humane Society in Mexico in response to the devastation brought by Hurricane Odile. Dr. John Charos, President/CEO of Central Veterinary Associates, worked alongside the New York City Veterinary Emergency Response Team (NYC VERT) to transport the donations to Los Cabos

When Hurricane Sandy ravaged local communities, CVA’s staff and doctors collected and distributed donations of pet food, blankets, bedding and other items to pet owners who were displaced during the storm. Even when CVA's Belle Harbor facility was destroyed by the storm, Central Vets’ Valley Stream hospital and its five other clinics continued to operate.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, CVA partnered with the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the New York City Office of Emergency Management to care for pets near the Ground Zero site as well as for the search-and-rescue dogs that were used to locate survivors trapped underneath the rubble.

Today, the doctors at CVA donate their time and talents to NYC VERT and the Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing awareness, understanding and appreciation of the environment and preservation of nature. Dr. Charos is a founding member and board member of APEC and currently serves on NYC VERT’s board of directors. Central Vets has raised funds for both organizations by performing low-cost microchipping clinics at the “Pets and Pals” party at Alley Pond Park, the Friends of Ft. Totten Parks’ “Family Fun Day” and at the Mineola Street Fair.

In addition to its animal care services, Central Vets’ doctors provide educational programs to those interested in veterinary medicine. Staff members participate in Career Day at APEC for veterinary technicians and often visit local elementary schools to speak to the children about their profession and what it entails, as well as check in on the animals being cared for by the students.

LIBN’s Corporate Citizenship — The Business of Giving recognizes companies and foundations for exemplary contributions to the economic and social well-being of employees, businesses and the community, and believes that its community stewardship, through partnerships with nonprofit organizations, strives to meet the critical needs of the community.
